If you are selling services or products online, you obviously want your site to get as many visitors as possible. To this end, you’ve probably already invested a great deal of time and/or money into Search Engine Optimization. If you haven’t done so already, you will soon because without adequate SEO, you simply won’t get the traffic you want and need.
Go it Alone or Hire Professionals?
There are millions of people doing their own SEO. Some are successful and some aren’t, but I think it’s safe to say that most are not as successful as they would like to be. In many of these cases, it is because they don’t really understand that there are some SEO tactics that will hurt search engine rankings.
This is also something to keep in mind if you intend outsourcing your SEO needs. Believe me, not all SEO experts are experts in the true sense of the word. Anyway, let’s take a look at a couple of SEO tactics that can damage your search engine rankings.
Site-wide Keyword Saturation
Anyone who has some knowledge of SEO will appreciate the need for using keywords. Most will also know that a keyword or keyword phrase should NOT appear more than once or twice in a 500+ word article. But, what happens if your site has hundreds of pages? How many times are your keywords or keyword phrases appearing across your site?
A Real Life Case Study
Not too long ago, the owners of a long established and highly respected travel website approached me and asked if I could give their site a complete SEO overhaul. However, they were adamant that I adhere to their SEO instructions. In other words, they had their own SEO strategy, and simply needed me to implement it.
One of the biggest tasks involved optimizing each of their site’s 1500+ pages. To do this, I was instructed to use a plugin which they had installed, and to optimize based on that software’s criteria. Once a certain field of SEO is satisfactory, a little green marker appears.
Based on my many years of SEO experience, I advised them against doing certain things that their software was asking for. One thing in particular was keyword frequency. I argued that the software was calling for too many keywords. It was obvious to me that at some point the site was going to be penalized for keyword stuffing.
When Google rolled their latest Penguin update, the site was hit with a massive penalty. Up until then, they had enjoyed a place on the front page of Google’s search results. A search for virtually any keyword phrase related to their niche would see their company on page one of the search results. Needless to say, they lost their search engine ranking overnight. They were penalized for keyword spamming.
Golden Rule: – If you are not sure about keyword density, then it’s best to play it safe by keeping keyword density to a minimum.
Toxic Link Juice
Link building is a very popular SEO tactic, and if it is done right, it can drive tons of visitors to your site. However, if it isn’t done correctly, then it becomes one of the SEO tactics that will hurt your website’s standing and search engine rankings.
When you place links to your site in articles and blogs, or you link to your site from other people’s blogs, or even from forums or social media sites, you’re essentially helping to drive more traffic to your site. This is commonly known as link juice, so what is toxic link juice?
Toxic link juice is when you place links on sites which are of no relevance to your site. Many website owners enter into link sharing agreements with other website owners. In other words, a network of websites all agree to help promote each other. But, if you are getting an unusually large amount of traffic, and most of that traffic is coming from low authority sites that are in no way connected to your particular niche, you and the sites you are involved with are all going to be penalized.
